Dermabrasion

What is Dermabrasion?

Dermabrasion is an intensive exfoliating treatment that removes the top layers of skin to aid in the healing process for scars and pigmentation as well as helping kick start collagen production for the firmer smoother skin. Dermabrasion uses a spinning wheel with a sand paper-like texture to remove dead skin cells and cause “safe damage” to kick start the skin’s own powerful healing process. Dermabrasion is perfect for treating skin concerns that are affecting the appearance of the top layers of the skin such as acne scars, sun damage and moderate fine lines and wrinkles. This heavy exfoliation jump starts the healing of scars and collagen production for a perfected complexion.

How is Dermabrasion Performed?

Most dermabrasion or procedures take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or more depending on the size of the treatment area. Since this treatment is more invasive than a microdermabrasion treatment, medications may be administered for your comfort. Local anesthesia is typically used, though some doctors may use a numbing spray or general anesthesia, depending on the degree and length of treatment. The exfoliating tool will be applied to the treatment area to exfoliate away the damaged and scarred skin.

Recovery

Dr. Ehrmantraut will follow up with you post treatment to go over after care instructions and answer any question you may have. Since the procedure is removing the top layer of skin you may experience a similar sensation to a “skinned knee” feeling as well as some scabbing which is completely normal during the healing process. It typically takes about 7-10 days for the new skin to form and heal and any redness and swelling should subside by then as well. Any lasting redness can be covered with mineral or camouflage makeup.
