Rhinoplasty

What is a Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, also known as nose surgery, is done to reshape the nose, making it more proportionate the rest of the face. It can correct a nose that is too large, too small, crooked, humped, or drooping. This procedure can also be done to correct breathing problems due to irregularities inside of the nose.

Who is a Good Candidate?

Individuals who are unhappy with the shape, angle, or size of their nose, or those who have breathing problems can often benefit from this procedure. Those who are nonsmokers and are in good health are ideal candidates. Individuals should desire an improvement, and not perfection, in the appearance of their nose. A consultation can help to determine candidacy.

The Procedure

There are two techniques used to perform rhinoplasty surgery. These include an open rhinoplasty and a closed rhinoplasty.

Open Rhinoplasty: During an open rhinoplasty, incisions are created across the columella, or the strip of tissue that separates the nostrils. Skin is then raised, and the structures of the nose are reshaped. The resulting scar is very small and barely visible after healing.

Closed Rhinoplasty: During a closed rhinoplasty, incisions are hidden inside of the nose. The surgeon then works to reshape the nose. There is no visible scar resulting from this technique.

The rhinoplasty technique used will depend on the patient’s individual anatomy and desired outcome from the procedure.

Recovery

After a rhinoplasty procedure, a nasal splint will need to be worn to support the nose. Nasal packing will be placed inside of the nose as well. Swelling and bruising will occur, and discomfort can be controlled with pain medication. Cold compresses can be applied under the eyes to reduce swelling. Patients should keep their heads elevated during recovery to further minimize swelling. Commonly, patients can return to normal activities within three weeks.
