Male Breast Reduction

What is Male Breast Reduction?

Male breast reduction is done to reduce breast size in men who are living with gynecomastia. Gynecomastia is a condition that causes the breast tissue of males to enlarge. This condition can occur at any age and is the result of hormonal changes, hereditary, obesity, or the use of certain drugs. Gynecomastia can cause self-consciousness and embarrassment in those who live with it.

Who is a Good Candidate?

Men who are living with the effects of gynecomastia and haven’t seen results through alternative medical treatments can often benefit from this procedure. Candidates will be generally healthy, non-smokers and non-drug users who are at a healthy weight. A consultation with Dr. Ehrmantraut can help to determine if this procedure is right for you.

The Procedure

Male breast reduction is done under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Multiple techniques can be used to perform male breast reduction. In cases where fatty tissue is the cause for enlarged breasts, liposuction alone may be used to remove fat. In cases where glandular breast tissue or excess skin are the causes for enlarged breasts, excision techniques may be necessary. Liposuction and excision methods may also be combined in some cases.

Recovery

Following male breast reduction, patients will need to wear compression garments to minimize swelling. Redness, swelling, and bruising are common, and discomfort can be controlled with pain medication. Many patients are able to return to work within 7-10 days following surgery. Strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for the first 2-3 weeks to ensure optimal healing. Be sure to follow Dr. Ehrmantraut’s post-op instructions to ensure a safe and quick recovery.
